I was contacted out of the blue by a recruiter Ami Flowers regarding a role. Before calling me, she had viewed my LinkedIn profile, which clearly shows that I now run my own business.I was genuinely curious about the opportunity and wanted to understand why I had been approached, especially given my current career direction. During the conversation, however, it became clear that the client was looking for a very specific candidate with recent investment banking experience. I was told they needed a “unicorn” for the role, which made me question why my profile had been targeted in the first place.I sent my CV as requested, explaining my background and that I was open to exploring opportunities that could work alongside as I built my business. After that, I received no acknowledgement or follow-up.The whole experience left me questioning whether there had been any genuine alignment between my profile and the role, or whether this was simply another example of the outdated recruitment approach that often prioritises collecting conversations over creating meaningful connections with candidates.What this interaction reminded me of most is exactly why I left the corporate world behind. The language, the assumptions, and the old-fashioned recruitment style felt disconnected from the way people actually build careers today. Terms like “unicorn candidate” and a transactional approach to people feel outdated. Recruitment needs to evolve and become more human, more thoughtful, and more aligned with modern career paths.I am leaving this review because the interaction genuinely left a bad taste in my mouth. My LinkedIn clearly showed I had launched my own business, so I left wondering whether this was a genuine opportunity discussion or more of a typical recruitment nosey conversation about what I was doing.

Ami Flowers set up an introductory interview call to get me registered to Tay Associates, on Friday 31st October, and on that same day was able to get me an interview with an Investment Banking company for an Executive Assistant role. By Monday 3rd November, I heard back and got the job!None of this would have been possible without Ami, and I will forever be so grateful. I had been job searching since I graduated in June and had been sent countless “we regret to inform you” emails, and Ami was able to get me a job in one day!
